Classification

  • Hordeum distichon: A two row type of barley, only the middle spikelets are fertile. Although the lateral spikelets are infertile, they possess all the floral organs.
  • Hordeum vulgare: The six rows of barley are widely grown and is the most important species.

Climate

  • Barley needs cold weather during early crop growth period and warm and dry weather at maturity.
  • Water requirement for good crop growth is 350-500 mm.
  • Critical stage in barley is active tillering stage (30-35 DAS)
  • Barley is a long day plant.
  • Seed rate: 75-80 kg/ha
