Charachteristics of Arthropoda and It's further classification
- Insects belong to the Phylum Arthropoda which is the biggest phylum of Animal kingdom.
- Arthropods: Greek words ⇒ Arthros means jointed + Podus means Leg
- In Phylum Arthropoda, besides insects, many creatures like crayfish, crabs, lobsters, centipedes, millipedes, spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions etc. come under this category.
Charachteristics of Phylum Arthropoda
- Paired segmented jointed appendages (legs)
- Segmented body
- Segments grouped into 2 or 3 regions known as Tagmosis
- Chitinous exoskeleton which is Renewable
- Growth by moulting
- Bilateral Symmetry
- Tubular alimentary canal with mouth and anus
- Open type of circulatory system
- Body cavity filled with blood which is known as Haemocoel
- Dorsal heart with ostia
- Ventral nervous system (nerve cord) with Dorsal brain
- Muscles are composed of striated fibres, ciliated epithelium absent (striated muscles with dark and light bands)
