Charachteristics of Arthropoda and It's further classification

  • Insects belong to the Phylum Arthropoda which is the biggest phylum of Animal kingdom.
  • Arthropods: Greek words ⇒ Arthros means jointed + Podus means Leg
  • In Phylum Arthropoda, besides insects, many creatures like crayfish, crabs, lobsters, centipedes, millipedes, spiders, mites, ticks, scorpions etc. come under this category.

Charachteristics of Phylum Arthropoda

  1. Paired segmented jointed appendages (legs)
  2. Segmented body
  3. Segments grouped into 2 or 3 regions known as Tagmosis
  4. Chitinous exoskeleton which is Renewable
  5. Growth by moulting
  6. Bilateral Symmetry
  7. Tubular alimentary canal with mouth and anus
  8. Open type of circulatory system
  9. Body cavity filled with blood which is known as Haemocoel
  10. Dorsal heart with ostia
  11. Ventral nervous system (nerve cord) with Dorsal brain
  12. Muscles are composed of striated fibres, ciliated epithelium absent (striated muscles with dark and light bands)
