Column Based Questions
Master column based sentence connection questions with detailed explanations.
Column Based Questions
Key Points to Solve Column-Based Questions
Format
- 3 sentences in Column A (P, Q, R) and 3 in Column B (S, T, U)
- 2–3 connectors are given (e.g., "but", "because", "and")
- Pair a Column A sentence + connector + Column B sentence to form a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence
Know Your Connectors
| Connector | Function |
|---|---|
| But / However | Contrast between two ideas |
| Because / As / Since | Reason or cause |
| And | Addition, continuation |
| Thus / Therefore / Hence | Result or consequence |
| While / Whereas | Simultaneous action or contrast |
| In order to | Purpose |
| Provided that / If | Condition |
| Given | Preposition — must be followed by a noun phrase, not a clause |
| Insofar as | Extent or qualification |
| Despite / In spite of | Contrast — followed by noun/gerund, NOT a clause |
Solving Strategy
- Grammar first, then meaning — check if the connector fits grammatically, then check if the combined sentence makes logical sense
- Read the full sentence — read Column A + connector + Column B as one complete sentence. The ending of A and beginning of B must flow naturally
- Check subject continuity — the subject in Column B must logically refer back to something in Column A
- Eliminate wrong pairs first — grammar errors are the fastest to spot
- If the option says "All of the above", verify every single pair — one wrong pair kills the option
The Combined Sentence Must Have Both Subject and Verb
When you join Column A + connector + Column B, the result must form a complete sentence with a clear subject and verb on both sides of the connector (where required).

The Combined Sentence Must Have Both Subject and Verb
When you join Column A + connector + Column B, the result must form a complete sentence with a clear subject and verb on both sides of the connector (where required).
Correct: "The government launched the scheme because the rural economy needed a boost."
- Left side: subject (The government) + verb (launched)
- Right side: subject (the rural economy) + verb (needed)
Incorrect: "The government launched the scheme because a boost to the rural economy."
- Right side has no verb — this is just a noun phrase, not a clause. The connector "because" requires a full clause after it.
Rule of thumb: Connectors like because, while, provided that, as, since, if demand a full clause (subject + verb) after them. Connectors like given, despite, in spite of take a noun phrase (no verb needed).
Common Traps
- "With" before "hence/therefore" — always invalid
- Tense mismatch with "while" — needs an ongoing action, not simple present
- "Provided that" needs a full clause (subject + verb), not just a noun phrase
- "Given" is a preposition — needs a noun phrase, not "given + subject + verb" without "that"
- "Despite" + "so/because" — double-marking the logical relationship is always wrong
- Two unrelated sentences joined by "and" — may be grammatically passable but logically weak; examiners reject these
Directions (1–15): Each question consists of two columns, A and B. Column A and Column B each contain three sentences, which can be connected using the connectors provided to form a contextually and grammatically correct sentence. Select the pairs that result in meaningful, complete sentences.
Set 1 — NABARD and Rural Credit
Connectors: 1. Because 2. Although 3. And
| Column A | Column B |
|---|---|
| (P) NABARD has been instrumental in channelling low-cost credit to rural areas | (S) many small farmers continue to rely on informal moneylenders for urgent financial needs. |
| (Q) The cooperative credit system reaches millions of households across India | (T) it still struggles with poor governance, political interference, and high non-performing assets. |
| (R) NABARD provides refinance to state cooperative banks | (U) it disbursed over ₹4 lakh crore in credit last year alone. |
Q1. Which of the following combinations forms a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence?
(a) P – Because – S (b) Q – Although – T (c) R – And – U (d) All (a), (b), and (c) (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (b) Q – Although – T**Let us verify each:
- P + Because + S: "NABARD has been instrumental in channelling low-cost credit to rural areas because many small farmers continue to rely on informal moneylenders." — Illogical. NABARD's work is not caused by farmers relying on moneylenders; the relationship is reversed or unrelated.
- Q + Although + T: "The cooperative credit system reaches millions of households across India although it still struggles with poor governance..." — Correct. "Although" introduces a contrast between wide reach (positive) and governance problems (negative).
- R + And + U: "NABARD provides refinance to state cooperative banks and it disbursed over ₹4 lakh crore in credit last year alone." — Grammatically passable but logically weak; the subject of U (it) is ambiguous and the two facts are not clearly related.
Q2. Which combination correctly uses "because" to express a cause-and-effect relationship?
(a) P – Because – U (b) Q – Because – S (c) R – Because – T (d) P – Because – T (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) None of these**- P + Because + U: "NABARD has been instrumental in channelling credit because it disbursed over ₹4 lakh crore." — The disbursement is a result of NABARD's work, not a cause of its being instrumental. Circular reasoning.
- Q + Because + S: "The cooperative credit system reaches millions because many small farmers continue to rely on moneylenders." — No causal link; farmers relying on moneylenders does not explain cooperative reach.
- R + Because + T: "NABARD provides refinance because it still struggles with poor governance." — Makes no sense; NABARD's lending is not caused by governance problems.
- P + Because + T: No logical cause-effect between NABARD's effectiveness and cooperative governance failures.
None of the pairs form a valid causal sentence.
Q3. Which combination correctly uses "although" to introduce a contrast?
(a) R – Although – S (b) P – Although – T (c) Q – Although – U (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (b) P – Although – T**- R + Although + S: "NABARD provides refinance to state cooperative banks although many small farmers continue to rely on informal moneylenders." — The contrast is weak; these are separate facts with no direct opposition.
- P + Although + T: "NABARD has been instrumental in channelling low-cost credit although it still struggles with poor governance..." — Valid contrast between NABARD's positive role and its institutional challenges.
- Q + Although + U: "The cooperative credit system reaches millions although it disbursed over ₹4 lakh crore." — No contrast here; both are positive facts.
Set 2 — Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana
Connectors: 1. But 2. So 3. Since
| Column A | Column B |
|---|---|
| (P) The PMFBY was designed to protect farmers from crop losses due to natural calamities | (S) farmers are required to pay only a nominal premium of 1.5% to 2% of the sum insured. |
| (Q) Claim settlements under the scheme have often been delayed by months | (T) many farmers remain sceptical about renewing their enrolment. |
| (R) Technology such as drones and satellite imagery is now being used for damage assessment | (U) the time taken to process and disburse claims has been significantly reduced. |
Q4. Which of the following combinations forms a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence?
(a) P – Since – S (b) Q – So – T (c) R – But – U (d) All (a), (b), and (c) (e) Only (a) and (b)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Only (a) and (b)**- P + Since + S: "The PMFBY was designed to protect farmers from crop losses since farmers are required to pay only a nominal premium." — Valid. The low premium (S) can be read as a feature/reason connected to the scheme's design intent.
- Q + So + T: "Claim settlements under the scheme have often been delayed by months so many farmers remain sceptical about renewing their enrolment." — Excellent cause-and-effect: delays cause scepticism.
- R + But + U: "Technology is now being used for damage assessment but the time taken to disburse claims has been significantly reduced." — Illogical. Using "but" implies contrast; however, U is a positive result of R, not a contradiction. Should use "so" or "and."
Q5. Which combination best uses "but" to show contrast?
(a) P – But – T (b) Q – But – U (c) R – But – S (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (a) P – But – T**- P + But + T: "The PMFBY was designed to protect farmers from crop losses but many farmers remain sceptical about renewing their enrolment." — Strong contrast: the scheme's protective intent versus farmers' continued scepticism. Valid.
- Q + But + U: "Claim settlements have been delayed but the time taken to disburse claims has been significantly reduced." — This creates a contradiction within the same idea; one cannot simultaneously say settlements are delayed and claim processing time has been reduced without additional context.
- R + But + S: "Technology is being used for damage assessment but farmers are required to pay only a nominal premium." — No logical contrast; these are unrelated facts.
Q6. Which combination correctly uses "so" to show a consequence?
(a) P – So – U (b) R – So – U (c) Q – So – S (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) Only (b)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Only (b)**- P + So + U: "The PMFBY was designed to protect farmers so the time to disburse claims has been significantly reduced." — The scheme's protective design does not logically cause faster disbursals; the connection is indirect.
- R + So + U: "Technology such as drones and satellite imagery is now being used for damage assessment so the time taken to process and disburse claims has been significantly reduced." — Direct and logical cause-and-effect. Technology → faster processing.
- Q + So + S: "Claim settlements have often been delayed so farmers are required to pay only a nominal premium." — No causal link; the premium is set by policy, not by delay history.
Set 3 — Digital Banking and Financial Inclusion
Connectors: 1. While 2. Therefore 3. Because
| Column A | Column B |
|---|---|
| (P) Digital payment platforms have made banking services more accessible to rural households | (S) low digital literacy and poor internet connectivity remain significant barriers in remote areas. |
| (Q) The Jan Dhan Yojana has opened over 50 crore bank accounts across the country | (T) financial inclusion cannot be considered complete until every account is actively used. |
| (R) Mobile banking fraud has increased sharply in rural areas | (U) regulators must prioritise digital financial literacy campaigns in these communities. |
Q7. Which of the following combinations forms a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence?
(a) P – While – S (b) Q – Therefore – T (c) R – Because – U (d) All (a), (b), and (c) (e) Only (a) and (b)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Only (a) and (b)**- P + While + S: "Digital payment platforms have made banking more accessible while low digital literacy and poor internet connectivity remain significant barriers." — Excellent contrast between progress and persistent challenges.
- Q + Therefore + T: "The Jan Dhan Yojana has opened over 50 crore accounts therefore financial inclusion cannot be considered complete until every account is actively used." — Valid consequence: account opening alone is not enough.
- R + Because + U: "Mobile banking fraud has increased because regulators must prioritise digital literacy campaigns." — Grammatically the sentence works, but logically: fraud hasn't increased because regulators must act. The correct relationship is reversed — regulators must act because fraud has increased. Use "so" not "because."
Q8. Which combination correctly uses "while" to draw a contrast?
(a) Q – While – S (b) P – While – T (c) R – While – U (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (d) Both (a) and (b)**- Q + While + S: "The Jan Dhan Yojana has opened over 50 crore accounts while low digital literacy and poor internet connectivity remain significant barriers." — Valid contrast between achievement and ongoing challenges.
- P + While + T: "Digital payment platforms have made banking more accessible while financial inclusion cannot be considered complete until every account is actively used." — Valid contrast between progress and incompleteness.
- R + While + U: "Mobile banking fraud has increased while regulators must prioritise digital literacy campaigns." — "While" here is awkward; U is a recommended action, not a simultaneous contrasting situation.
Q9. Which combination correctly uses "therefore" or "so" to show a logical outcome?
(a) R – Therefore – U (b) P – Therefore – T (c) Q – Therefore – S (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) Only (a)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (d) Both (a) and (b)**- R + Therefore + U: "Mobile banking fraud has increased sharply in rural areas therefore regulators must prioritise digital financial literacy campaigns." — Direct and logical: rising fraud → need for awareness campaigns.
- P + Therefore + T: "Digital payment platforms have made banking more accessible therefore financial inclusion cannot be considered complete until every account is actively used." — Logical: accessibility is a step but completeness requires usage.
- Q + Therefore + S: "The Jan Dhan Yojana has opened 50 crore accounts therefore low digital literacy and poor connectivity remain barriers." — No logical link; account opening does not cause or result from literacy gaps.
Set 4 — Agriculture and Climate Change
Connectors: 1. However 2. Since 3. And
| Column A | Column B |
|---|---|
| (P) The Indian monsoon has become increasingly erratic due to climate change | (S) the government has launched drought-tolerant seed programmes and expanded irrigation coverage. |
| (Q) Post-harvest losses in India account for nearly 16% of total agricultural produce every year | (T) rain-fed farming, which covers over half the cultivated area, is under serious stress. |
| (R) Cold chain infrastructure and food processing capacity remain underdeveloped in most states | (U) farmers lose a significant portion of their income before produce even reaches the market. |
Q10. Which of the following combinations forms a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence?
(a) P – However – S (b) Q – And – U (c) R – Since – U (d) All (a), (b), and (c) (e) Only (a) and (b)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Only (a) and (b)**- P + However + S: "The Indian monsoon has become increasingly erratic however the government has launched drought-tolerant seed programmes." — Valid contrast: the climate problem is met with a policy response.
- Q + And + U: "Post-harvest losses account for nearly 16% of total produce and farmers lose a significant portion of their income before produce reaches the market." — Valid addition: both facts describe the economic damage of post-harvest waste.
- R + Since + U: "Cold chain infrastructure remains underdeveloped since farmers lose a significant portion of their income." — Logically reversed: cold chain gaps cause income loss; U does not explain why infrastructure is underdeveloped.
Q11. Which combination correctly uses "since" to show a reason?
(a) P – Since – T (b) Q – Since – S (c) R – Since – T (d) Both (a) and (c) (e) None of these
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (a) P – Since – T**- P + Since + T: "The Indian monsoon has become increasingly erratic since rain-fed farming, which covers over half the cultivated area, is under serious stress." — Valid: the erratic monsoon is the reason rain-fed farming is under stress. Fits the "since = because" usage.
- Q + Since + S: "Post-harvest losses account for 16% of produce since the government has launched drought-tolerant seed programmes." — No logical link.
- R + Since + T: "Cold chain infrastructure remains underdeveloped since rain-fed farming is under serious stress." — No causal relationship between cold chain infrastructure and rain-fed farming stress.
Q12. Which combination correctly uses "however" to show a contrast?
(a) Q – However – S (b) R – However – T (c) P – However – U (d) Both (a) and (c) (e) Only (a)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Only (a)**- Q + However + S: "Post-harvest losses account for 16% of produce however the government has launched drought-tolerant seed programmes." — Valid contrast: the problem of food waste versus the government's agricultural initiatives. The government is responding to food security challenges.
- R + However + T: "Cold chain infrastructure remains underdeveloped however rain-fed farming is under serious stress." — No contrasting relationship; both are problems, not opposing facts.
- P + However + U: "The Indian monsoon has become erratic however farmers lose a significant portion of their income." — The two facts are related but not contrasting.
Q13. Which combination correctly uses "and" to add related information?
(a) P – And – T (b) R – And – U (c) Q – And – S (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) Only (b)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (d) Both (a) and (b)**- P + And + T: "The Indian monsoon has become increasingly erratic and rain-fed farming is under serious stress." — Direct addition: climate change disrupts monsoon, which in turn stresses rain-fed agriculture. Both facts are connected.
- R + And + U: "Cold chain infrastructure remains underdeveloped and farmers lose a significant portion of their income before produce reaches the market." — Valid addition: both facts describe infrastructure and income gaps that compound each other.
- Q + And + S: "Post-harvest losses account for 16% of produce and the government has launched drought-tolerant seed programmes." — The two facts are about different problems and unrelated without a stronger context.
Q14. Identify the INCORRECT combination and explain why.
(a) P – Since – T (erratic monsoon causes stress to rain-fed farming) (b) R – And – U (underdeveloped cold chain causes income loss for farmers) (c) Q – However – S (post-harvest losses contrast with government action) (d) P – However – S (erratic monsoon contrast with government response) (e) Q – Since – T (post-harvest losses because rain-fed farming is stressed)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) Q – Since – T**- Q + Since + T: "Post-harvest losses account for 16% of produce since rain-fed farming is under serious stress." — Incorrect. Post-harvest losses occur after harvest (storage, transport) and are not caused by rain-fed farming stress, which is an agricultural input problem. The two sentences describe unrelated causal domains.
- All other combinations — (a), (b), (c), and (d) — are logical and grammatically valid.
Q15. Which single combination, out of all four sets above, represents the strongest example of a cause-and-effect relationship using a connector?
(a) Q – So – T (Set 2) (b) R – Therefore – U (Set 3) (c) P – Since – T (Set 4) (d) Both (a) and (b) (e) All of (a), (b), and (c)
Answer & Explanation
**Answer: (e) All of (a), (b), and (c)**All three are strong cause-and-effect pairs:
- (a) Q + So + T (Set 2): Delays in claim settlement → farmer scepticism. Direct behavioural consequence.
- (b) R + Therefore + U (Set 3): Rising mobile banking fraud → regulators must run literacy campaigns. Policy response to a measurable problem.
- (c) P + Since + T (Set 4): Erratic monsoon → stress on rain-fed farming. Environmental cause leading to agricultural effect.
Each pair presents a clear, unambiguous logical chain. In the exam, when multiple options are correct, check whether "All of the above" is offered — and verify each pair individually before selecting it.
