🎯 One Word Substitution

Replace entire phrases with a single precise word — a high-scoring vocabulary topic for competitive exams.

One Word Substitution

One Word Substitution (OWS) means replacing a phrase or description with a single word. This is a direct question type in IBPS, SBI, SSC, and NABARD exams — you're given a phrase and asked to pick the correct word.

TIP

Strategy: Learn OWS by category (people, places, actions, studies). Most exam questions fall into predictable groups. Master the categories and you'll answer even unfamiliar questions by elimination.

How to Solve OWS Questions

  1. Look at root words — Latin/Greek roots reveal meaning (e.g., omni = all, phobia = fear, cide = killing)
  2. Use elimination — even if you don't know the answer, recognise wrong roots
  3. Use the Vocabulary Explorer — look up unfamiliar options to verify their exact meaning
  4. Focus on the key distinguishing word in the phrase — it usually maps to a specific root
