• The word ‘Extension’ is derived from the Latin roots, tensio meaning stretching and ex meaning out.
• An out-of-school system of education for rural people.
• Extension is a type of education to bring desirable change in human behaviour. The instrument used to bring this change is Communication.

• Education: Production of desirable changes in human behaviour through gaining desirable Knowledge, Attitude and Mental and Manual skill is called Education.
• Extension Education is the type of education which is stretched out the villages and field beyond the limits of schools and colleges to which the formal type of education is normally confined to it.
• Extension education is used in various fields, such as Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy, Veterinary, Health, Home Science, Industry, Cooperative and Forestry.

Origin of Extension

• The use of term ‘extension’ originated in England/U.K. in 1866 with a system of University extension which was taken up first by Cambridge and Oxford Universities.
• The objective of university extension was to take the educational innovations to take the advantages of universities to ordinary people at their door steps.
• The term extension first used by Vorhees.
• The first practical step to give lectures to “Women’s Associations & Working Men’s Club” done by James Stewatt in 1867-68. So he is regarded as Father of University Extension.
• The term Extension Education was first used in 1873 by Cambridge University (UK) to describe this particular education innovative.
• According to Webster’s dictionary the term “extension” means “Branch of a university for student who cannot attend the university properly”.
