🌾 Indian Cropping Seasons
Guide to Kharif, Rabi and Zaid cropping seasons of India for CUET Agriculture. Sowing-harvesting timelines and major crops per season covered.
Crop Weather Calendars — Indian Cropping Seasons
India has three main cropping seasons, each aligned with the country's distinct weather patterns. This is one of the most frequently tested topics in CUET agriculture.
Kharif Season (Monsoon Crops)
- Sowing: June-July (coincides with the onset of the southwest monsoon)
- Harvesting: September-October
- Major crops: Rice, Maize, Sorghum (Jowar), Pearl millet (Bajra), Groundnut, Cotton, Soybean, Pigeon pea (Arhar/Tur), Jute, Sugarcane
These crops require warm temperatures and abundant rainfall, both of which are provided by the southwest monsoon.
Rabi Season (Winter Crops)
- Sowing: October-November
- Harvesting: March-April
- Major crops: Wheat, Barley, Chickpea (Gram/Chana), Lentil (Masur), Mustard, Peas, Linseed, Safflower
Rabi crops need cool temperatures for vegetative growth and warm, dry conditions for grain maturity. They rely mainly on irrigation and residual soil moisture rather than direct rainfall.
Zaid Season (Summer Crops)
- Sowing: March-April
- Harvesting: May-June
- Major crops: Watermelon, Muskmelon, Cucumber, Moong (summer), Sunflower, Vegetables
Zaid is a short summer season between Rabi harvest and Kharif sowing. Crops grown in this season are typically short-duration and require irrigation, as there is no monsoon rainfall during this period.

IMPORTANT
Quick memory aid for seasons:
- Kharif = King of rainfall (monsoon season, June-Oct)
- Rabi = Rest of the year after monsoon (winter, Oct-Mar)
- Zaid = Zip-quick season (short summer, Mar-Jun)
Key Crop-Weather Relationships
These specific crop-weather associations are high-priority for exams:
- Rice: Requires 150-200 cm rainfall or equivalent irrigation; temperature must remain above 20°C. Rice is a warm-season, water-loving crop that thrives in flooded conditions.
- Wheat: A cool season crop with optimum temperature of 15-20°C. Wheat is particularly sensitive to high temperature at the grain filling stage — heat stress during this period leads to shrivelled grains and yield loss (a phenomenon called "forced maturity").
- Cotton: Requires a long growing season (6-7 months) and needs warm days and cool nights. This temperature pattern (thermoperiodism) promotes fibre development and boll opening.
- Sugarcane: A 12-month crop that needs a hot and humid climate for vegetative growth (to produce tall, thick canes) and a dry period for maturation (to accumulate sugar in the stalks). This is why sugarcane is typically planted in spring and harvested in winter.
Key Points to Remember
- Kharif: Sown June-July, harvested Sep-Oct (monsoon-dependent)
- Rabi: Sown Oct-Nov, harvested Mar-Apr (irrigation-dependent)
- Zaid: Sown Mar-Apr, harvested May-June (short summer season)
- Rice requires 150-200 cm rainfall; sensitive to temperatures below 20°C
- Wheat is sensitive to heat at grain filling stage → shrivelled grains / forced maturity
- Sugarcane = 12-month crop; needs hot-humid growth phase + dry maturation phase
