These puzzles combine box arrangement with additional variables like items, dates, colors, or weights. Each box/person gets assigned values from multiple categories, making the puzzle multi-dimensional.
Types of Box + Variable Puzzles
Type 1: Boxes with Items/Colors
- 8 boxes (A-H) are numbered 1-8, each containing a different biscuit brand
- You must determine both the box position AND which item is in each box
Type 2: Boxes with Dates
- Boxes are labeled I-VII corresponding to dates (e.g., 25th-31st December)
- Each box has a color assigned to it
Type 3: Boxes with Weights and Math Conditions
- 6 boxes with specific weights (24, 25, 36, 37, 43, 81 kg)
- Conditions use mathematical properties: "weight is a perfect square", "weight is prime", "weight is divisible by 6"

Solved Example: Boxes with Numbers and Items
Question: Eight boxes A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H are numbered 1-8 (bottom to top). Each box contains a different biscuit: Bourbon, Marie, Parle-G, Good Day, Oreo, Hide & Seek, Monaco, Tiger.
Conditions:
- Box D is numbered 4
- The box containing Bourbon is immediately above D
- 3 boxes between A and the box containing Oreo
- Box A is above the box containing Oreo
- F contains Marie and is at an even-numbered position
- B is immediately below C
- The box containing Good Day is at position 7
- H is at position 1
- G contains Tiger
Solution:
Definite placements: D = 4, H = 1, Good Day at position 7
From (2): Bourbon is immediately above D(4), so Bourbon is at position 5
From (5): F contains Marie, at even position. Even positions: 2, 4, 6, 8. D is at 4, so F is at 2, 6, or 8.
From (6): B is immediately below C (B and C are consecutive, C on top)
From (3) and (4): 3 boxes between A and Oreo, A is above Oreo.
- If Oreo is at 1 (H), A is at 1 + 3 + 1 = 5. A is at 5 (contains Bourbon).
- If Oreo is at 2, A is at 6
- If Oreo is at 3, A is at 7 (has Good Day — A would contain Good Day)
- If Oreo is at 4 (D), A is at 8
- If Oreo is at 5, A is at 9 (impossible)
Let's try Oreo at 2, A at 6: Remaining positions for B, C, E, F, G: 3, 5, 7, 8 (and F at even: 8)
F = 8 (only even position left). B-C consecutive pair fits at (3,4) — but 4 is D. Or (5, 6) — 6 is A. Or (7, 8) — 8 is F.
Try B = 3, C = 4 — but D = 4. Not possible. Try B = 5, C = 6 — A is at 6. Not possible. Try B = 7, C = 8 — F is at 8. Not possible.
Remaining: E and G at 3, 5, 7. B-C pair needs 2 consecutive positions from {3, 5, 7} — no two are consecutive. Dead end.
Try Oreo at 1 (H contains Oreo), A at 5 (contains Bourbon): Remaining positions: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 for B, C, E, F, G F at even position: 2, 6, or 8 B-C pair (consecutive): could be (2,3), (6,7), (7,8)
Good Day at position 7. Let's say B = 6, C = 7 (C contains Good Day). F at even: 2 or 8. G at remaining position.
If F = 2, then E and G at 3 and 8. From (9): G contains Tiger.
This works! G could be at 3 or 8. E gets the other.

Mathematical Conditions in Box Puzzles
Some box puzzles include math-based conditions on weights or numbers:

Example with weights: Boxes have weights 24, 25, 36, 37, 43, 81 kg.
- "Box at position 3 has a weight that is a perfect square" — weight is 25, 36, or 81
- "The box with prime weight is above the box with weight 36" — prime weights are 25 (not prime, 5x5), 37, 43. So 37 or 43 is above 36.
Strategy for Multi-Variable Box Puzzles
- Solve the position arrangement first — determine who is at which position
- Then assign variables — once positions are fixed, map items/colors/weights to positions
- Use math conditions as filters — these can quickly narrow down which value goes where
- Cross-reference position and variable conditions — "The box containing X is at an even position" links both dimensions
Speed Tips
- Write all given values (items, colors, weights) on the side of your grid
- Strike through values as you assign them
- For math conditions, pre-calculate which values satisfy the condition before applying
- When a condition links a variable to a position (like "Marie is at even position"), it creates a strong constraint — use these early
- Draw arrows to show relationships between conditions for quick reference
