What is IBPS PO & SBI PO? — Complete Guide 2026

Comprehensive guide to IBPS PO and SBI PO exams — conducting bodies, history, role of a Probationary Officer, career prospects, and why Bank PO is one of the best government jobs in India.

What is a Bank Probationary Officer (PO)?

A Bank Probationary Officer (PO) is an entry-level officer cadre position in Indian public sector banks. POs are recruited as Scale I officers and undergo a probation period of 2 years, during which they are trained in all banking operations — branch management, credit appraisal, loan sanctioning, customer service, and administrative functions.

After successful completion of probation, POs are confirmed as officers and become eligible for promotions to higher scales. Many POs rise to become General Managers, Executive Directors, or even Managing Directors of banks within 20-25 years.
