Coal, Limestone & Industrial Minerals

Detailed study of coal deposits in Singrauli, limestone in Mirzapur-Sonbhadra, silica sand for Firozabad glass industry, dolomite, gypsum, and building stone in UP for UPSSSC AGTA.

Coal — Singrauli Coalfield

Coal is UP’s most economically significant mineral. The Singrauli coalfield in Sonbhadra district is the sole commercial coal-producing area in the entire state. It forms part of the larger Singrauli coal basin that extends into Madhya Pradesh.

The coalfield hosts the Singrauli Super Thermal Power Complex — one of the largest thermal power clusters in Asia. Multiple power stations operated by NTPC (Vindhyachal, Singrauli, Rihand) draw coal directly from nearby open-cast mines.

ParameterDetails
LocationSonbhadra district (bordering MP)
CoalfieldSingrauli coalfield
Coal TypeBituminous (non-coking)
Estimated Reserves~1,063 million tonnes
Mining OperatorNorthern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a subsidiary of Coal India
Key MinesJayant, Dudhichua, Amlohri, Nigahi, Khadia
Power StationsVindhyachal (4,760 MW), Singrauli (2,000 MW), Rihand/Anpara

Exam Tip: Singrauli coalfield produces non-coking coal used for thermal power, not metallurgical/coking coal used in steel-making. NCL (Northern Coalfields Ltd) operates all mines here.

Limestone — Cement Industry Backbone

Limestone is the most widely distributed mineral in UP’s southern belt. It occurs abundantly in the Vindhyan rock formations across Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, and Banda districts.

Limestone Deposits by District

DistrictNotable AreasKey Use
MirzapurChunar, RobertsganjCement manufacturing
SonbhadraDalla, ChopanCement, chemical industry
BandaBabina, KalinjarBuilding material, lime
ChitrakootManikpur areaLocal construction

The town of Chunar (Mirzapur) has been historically famous for its limestone — the Chunar fort itself is built on a massive limestone outcrop. The Dalla cement factory in Sonbhadra (operated by JP Cement and others) is among UP’s most important cement plants.

UP’s limestone is classified as cement-grade (with CaO content above 44%) and chemical-grade varieties. Total estimated reserves exceed 500 million tonnes.

Industrial Applications

  • Cement manufacturing — primary consumer (~70% of production)
  • Chemical industry — calcium carbide, soda ash
  • Iron and steel — flux in blast furnaces
  • Agriculture — soil amendment for acidic soils
  • Construction — building stone, lime mortar

Silica Sand & Glass Sand

UP is among India’s leading producers of silica sand (glass sand). The deposits are concentrated around Shankargarh and Karchana in Prayagraj district.

This silica sand feeds one of India’s most famous cottage industries — the Firozabad glass industry. Firozabad (in Agra division) produces an estimated 70% of India’s glass bangles and a significant share of household glassware.

ParameterDetails
Key DepositsShankargarh, Karchana (Prayagraj)
SiO₂ Content95–99% (high purity)
Primary ConsumerFirozabad glass industry
Other UsesCeramics, foundry casting, water filtration
Estimated Reserves~450 million tonnes

Exam Tip: The connection between Shankargarh silica sand and Firozabad glass bangles is a frequently tested fact. Remember: Shankargarh supplies, Firozabad manufactures.

Dolomite

Dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) is found in the Vindhyan formations of Sonbhadra and Mirzapur districts. It often occurs alongside limestone deposits.

ParameterDetails
Chemical FormulaCaMg(CO₃)₂
LocationsSonbhadra (Robertsganj), Mirzapur
Estimated Reserves~150 million tonnes
UsesSteel industry (flux), refractory bricks, fertilizer filler

Dolomite from UP is transported to steel plants in eastern India and is also used locally in the cement industry as a raw material blend.

Gypsum

Gypsum deposits in UP are found primarily in the western districts, particularly in areas bordering Rajasthan. While UP’s gypsum reserves are modest compared to Rajasthan (India’s largest producer), they serve local demand.

ParameterDetails
Chemical FormulaCaSO₄·2H₂O
LocationWestern UP (bordering Rajasthan)
Primary UseCement additive (retarder), plaster of Paris
Other UsesSoil amendment for usar/alkaline soils, fertilizer

Gypsum plays a dual role in UP — industrially as a cement ingredient, and agriculturally as a reclamation agent for usar (alkaline/sodic) soils that plague large tracts of central and eastern UP.

Building Stone & Sandstone

The Vindhyan sandstone from Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, and Banda is one of UP’s most commercially valuable minor minerals. This reddish-brown to buff sandstone has been used in construction for centuries — from Mughal-era monuments to modern buildings.

VarietySourceCharacteristics
Red SandstoneMirzapur, BandaUsed in heritage construction
Buff/Yellow SandstoneChitrakoot, BandaDecorative, export quality

Sandstone quarrying is a significant source of employment in the Vindhyan region, though it raises environmental concerns related to deforestation and habitat destruction.

Industrial Linkages

The minerals of southern UP form an interconnected industrial ecosystem:

Key Takeaways

  • Coal is found only in Singrauli (Sonbhadra) — non-coking, operated by NCL
  • Limestone is the most widespread mineral — Chunar and Dalla are key centres
  • Silica sand from Shankargarh feeds Firozabad’s glass industry
  • Dolomite co-occurs with limestone in Sonbhadra-Mirzapur
  • Gypsum serves both industry (cement) and agriculture (usar soil reclamation)
  • Vindhyan sandstone is commercially valuable for construction and export
