UP — India's Top Tourist Destination

Map of major Uttar Pradesh tourism circuits including Agra Braj Buddhist Awadh Ayodhya Bundelkhand Varanasi heritage and 1857 trail
Tourism circuits are easiest to revise as map-based thematic clusters, not as one long undifferentiated destination list.

Uttar Pradesh is one of India's most important tourism states because it combines religious pilgrimage, world-famous heritage monuments, Buddhist international sites, and living cultural traditions. For exam preparation, tourism circuits should be understood as thematic travel groupings that help organize places by religion, history, culture, or craft, rather than as a fixed list that never changes.

How to Study Tourism Circuits

  • First identify the theme: heritage, pilgrimage, epic tradition, freedom struggle, or craft.
  • Then attach 2-4 anchor destinations to each circuit instead of trying to memorize every place at once.
  • Finally, connect the circuit with its tourism logic:
    • Buddhist -> international pilgrimage
    • Agra-Braj -> heritage plus Krishna devotion
    • Awadh-Ayodhya -> Nawabi culture plus Ram pilgrimage
    • Handicraft -> ODOP and cultural economy
