🏷️ Market Structure, Conduct, and Performance

Learn the structure-conduct-performance framework and how it is used to evaluate agricultural markets.

Agricultural markets differ widely in competition, information flow, number of traders, and quality of services. The structure-conduct-performance framework helps analyze how those differences affect farmers and consumers.

The SCP Approach

The structure-conduct-performance (SCP) framework studies markets through three linked ideas:

  • market structure: how the market is organized
  • market conduct: how market participants behave
  • market performance: how well the market serves economic goals

It is a standard tool in agricultural marketing analysis.

Market Structure

Market structure refers to the organizational characteristics of a market.

Important elements include:

  • number of buyers and sellers
  • degree of concentration
  • barriers to entry
  • product differentiation
  • availability of market information
  • physical and institutional infrastructure

A highly concentrated market may give more power to a few traders, while a more competitive market may improve farmer bargaining conditions.

Market Conduct

Market conduct refers to how buyers, sellers, agents, and institutions behave in the market.

Examples include:

  • pricing practices
  • collusion or competition
  • methods of grading and payment
  • storage and timing decisions
  • use or misuse of market information
  • terms imposed on producers

Conduct shows whether market behavior is efficient, transparent, and fair.

Market Performance

Market performance evaluates how efficiently the market functions.

It is judged by factors such as:

  • price efficiency
  • marketing cost
  • marketing margin
  • producer's share in consumer's rupee
  • quality of services
  • speed and fairness of transactions

A well-performing agricultural market should move produce efficiently while giving reasonable returns to producers and fair prices to consumers.

Why SCP Matters in Agriculture

In agriculture, the SCP framework helps explain issues such as:

  • why farmers receive low prices despite high consumer prices
  • how trader concentration affects competition
  • whether market reforms improve price transmission
  • how infrastructure and information shape market outcomes

This makes SCP useful not only for theory but also for policy and market reform.
