🏷 Nomenclature of Commonly Available Herbicides in India

Understand the difference between common names, trade names, and chemical names of herbicides used in agriculture.

This lesson helps you read herbicide labels and agronomy recommendations correctly by distinguishing between different naming systems.

Why Herbicide Nomenclature Matters

The same herbicide may appear under multiple labels in the field. Students and practitioners must understand whether a name refers to:

  • the active ingredient
  • the trade or brand name
  • the chemical name

Without this distinction, the same herbicide may be mistaken for different products.

1. Common Name

The common name is the standard short name used in agronomy, recommendations, and most weed-science discussion.

Examples:

  • glyphosate
  • atrazine
  • pendimethalin
  • paraquat

This is usually the most practical name for field communication.

2. Trade Name

The trade name is the commercial brand name under which a company markets the product.

Examples:

  • glyphosate may be sold under brand names such as Roundup
  • pendimethalin may appear under brands such as Stomp

Different manufacturers may market the same active ingredient under different trade names.

3. Chemical Name

The chemical name gives the formal scientific identity of the active molecule. It is longer and more precise but less convenient for daily field use.

Example:

  • 2,4-D stands for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid

Why One Herbicide Has Three Names

This happens because:

  • the common name is convenient
  • the trade name is commercial
  • the chemical name is scientific and exact

When reading a herbicide recommendation, the active ingredient matters most, not the brand alone.

Major Herbicide Families Commonly Encountered

Students should recognize that herbicides are also grouped by chemistry. Common groups include:

  • phenoxy acids
  • dinitroanilines
  • triazines
  • ureas
  • thiocarbamates
  • amides
  • bipyridyliums
  • glycine derivatives

This classification helps in understanding mode of action, selectivity, persistence, and resistance management.

Examples of Common Name and Trade Name Logic

2,4-D

  • common name: 2,4-D
  • chemical name: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid

Atrazine

  • common name: atrazine
  • belongs to the triazine group

Pendimethalin

  • common name: pendimethalin
  • belongs to the dinitroaniline group

Glyphosate

  • common name: glyphosate
  • widely known under various trade names

Paraquat

  • common name: paraquat
  • often recognized quickly because of its non-selective contact action

Practical Importance in India

In Indian recommendations, herbicides may be listed by:

  • active ingredient
  • formulation strength
  • brand example
  • dose as kg active ingredient per hectare

Therefore, the farmer or student must understand that a recommendation is not just a product name. It is a combination of:

  • active ingredient
  • formulation
  • concentration
  • dose

Common Mistake to Avoid

Do not assume two trade names mean two different herbicides. Many are simply different brands of the same active ingredient.

Also, do not compare doses across products without checking the formulation strength.

Management Implication

Correct understanding of nomenclature helps in:

  • reading labels
  • avoiding duplicate application of the same herbicide under different brands
  • interpreting extension recommendations correctly
  • planning herbicide rotation by active ingredient, not just by trade name

Summary Cheat Sheet

  • Herbicides are identified through common name, trade name, and chemical name.
  • The common name is the practical agronomic name; the trade name is the market brand; the chemical name is the formal scientific identity.
  • Many brands may contain the same active ingredient.
  • Herbicide recommendations should be interpreted by active ingredient and formulation, not brand name alone.
  • Nomenclature knowledge is essential for correct dose, rotation, and safe use.
