🎒 Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management in agriculture — components, models, cold chain, and FPO-based supply chains.

This lesson builds core elective concepts in BSc Agriculture with practical applications and exam-oriented clarity.

Supply Chain Management

Agricultural Supply Chain Management (ASCM) involves the coordination of all activities from input procurement through production, processing, and distribution to the final consumer. Efficient supply chains reduce post-harvest losses and improve farmer incomes.

Components of the Agricultural Supply Chain

Stage Activities
Input supply Seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, credit, advisory services
Production Land preparation, sowing, crop management, harvesting
Post-harvest Cleaning, grading, sorting, packing, storage
Processing Primary processing (milling, drying) and secondary processing (canning, freezing)
Distribution Transportation, wholesaling, retailing
Consumption Final consumer, institutional buyers, exports

Supply Chain Models in Indian Agriculture

  • Traditional model — farmer to commission agent to wholesaler to retailer to consumer (long chain, high margins lost)
  • Contract farming model — direct linkage between farmer and processor/retailer (e.g., PepsiCo potato farming)
  • FPO-based model — Farmer Producer Organizations aggregate produce for better bargaining and market access
  • E-commerce model — platforms like eNAM, BigBasket, and Ninjacart connecting farmers to urban consumers

Cold Chain Infrastructure

The cold chain is critical for perishable commodities like fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat:

  • Pre-cooling units at the farm gate
  • Reefer vehicles for transportation
  • Cold storage and ripening chambers
  • Frozen storage for long-term preservation

India has an estimated cold storage capacity of about 39 million MT, but the gap remains significant for fruits and vegetables.

Challenges in Agricultural Supply Chains

  • Fragmented landholdings make aggregation difficult
  • Poor rural road connectivity increases transit losses
  • Inadequate cold chain leads to 15-20% post-harvest losses
  • Multiple intermediaries reduce the farmer's share in consumer price
  • Information asymmetry between farmers and market participants

Government Initiatives

  • Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) — INR 1 lakh crore for post-harvest infrastructure
  • PM Kisan SAMPADA — scheme for agro-processing clusters
  • Operation Greens — TOP (Tomato, Onion, Potato) to Kisan scheme for price stabilization
  • eNAM — unified national market for agricultural commodities

Effective supply chain management is the backbone of modern agribusiness, ensuring that produce reaches consumers with minimal loss and maximum value.
