🍲 Global Food Safety Standards
Global Food Safety Standards.
This lesson builds core elective concepts in BSc Agriculture with practical applications and exam-oriented clarity.
Global Food Safety Standards
International food safety standards provide a harmonized framework for ensuring food quality and safety across borders. As global food trade expands, adherence to recognized international standards becomes essential for market access, consumer protection, and regulatory compliance.
Codex Alimentarius
The Codex Alimentarius (Latin for "food code") is a collection of internationally recognized standards, guidelines, and codes of practice developed jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Established in 1963, it covers food hygiene, food additives, pesticide residues, contaminants, labeling, and methods of analysis. Codex standards serve as the reference point for the World Trade Organization in resolving food trade disputes under the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement.
ISO 22000
ISO 22000 is an international standard for food safety management systems published by the International Organization for Standardization. It integrates the principles of HACCP with prerequisite programs and management system elements from ISO 9001. ISO 22000 is applicable to all organizations in the food chain, from feed producers and primary producers to food manufacturers, transport operators, and retail outlets. Certification demonstrates a systematic approach to controlling food safety hazards.
BRC Global Standard for Food Safety
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard is one of the most widely recognized food safety certification schemes. It requires a fully documented and implemented HACCP system, an audited quality management system, and control of factory environment, product, process, and personnel. BRC certification is often a prerequisite for supplying food products to major retailers in the United Kingdom and Europe.
SQF (Safe Quality Food)
The SQF Program is a rigorous food safety and quality management certification system recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). It operates at three levels: SQF Fundamentals (basic food safety), SQF Food Safety Code, and SQF Quality Code. SQF certification is widely accepted in North American and Australian markets.
FSSC 22000
FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) combines ISO 22000 with additional technical specifications (ISO/TS 22002 series) and FSSC-specific requirements. It is fully recognized by GFSI and is particularly popular among multinational food manufacturers seeking a comprehensive, globally benchmarked certification scheme. FSSC 22000 covers food manufacturing, animal feed production, packaging material manufacture, and food storage and distribution.
