🌷 Lawn Making and Maintenance
Lawn Making and Maintenance.
A lawn forms the visual base of most landscape compositions, and its quality depends on correct establishment method, species selection, and disciplined maintenance.
A lawn is an area of land covered with closely mown grass, forming a smooth green carpet. Lawns are the foundation of most landscape designs, providing open spaces that enhance the beauty of gardens, parks, sports grounds, and institutional areas.
Importance of Lawns
- Provide a cool and restful green surface for relaxation
- Serve as a setting and backdrop for trees, shrubs, and flower beds
- Reduce soil erosion and dust
- Help in temperature moderation — lawns are 10-14°F cooler than bare soil
- Noise reduction and air purification
- Recreational use — Sports, play areas, picnic spaces
Lawn Grasses Suitable for Indian Conditions
| Grass Species | Common Name | Climate | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cynodon dactylon | Doob grass / Bermuda grass | Tropical/Subtropical | Most popular; hardy; spreads rapidly |
| Zoysia japonica | Korean grass / Zoysia | Subtropical | Fine texture; slow growth; shade-tolerant |
| Stenotaphrum secundatum | Buffalo grass | Tropical | Coarse; shade-tolerant; low maintenance |
| Axonopus compressus | Carpet grass | Tropical, humid | Good for shade; forms dense mat |
| Paspalum vaginatum | Seashore paspalum | Coastal | Highly salt-tolerant; fine texture |
| Lolium perenne | Perennial rye grass | Temperate/Winter | Used for overseeding in winter |
| Festuca arundinacea | Tall fescue | Temperate | Shade-tolerant; drought-resistant |
Methods of Lawn Establishment
Seeding
- Cheapest method but slow establishment
- Suitable for large areas
- Seed rate: 5-8 g/sq.m for Bermuda grass
- Seeds mixed with sand for uniform distribution
- Best time: onset of monsoon (June-July)
Turfing (Sodding)
- Fastest method — instant lawn
- Cut turf pieces (30 x 30 cm or rolls) laid on prepared soil
- Higher cost but immediate establishment
- No weed problems during establishment
Dibbling
- Planting small rooted pieces (sprigs) at regular intervals
- Spacing: 10-15 cm apart in a grid pattern
- Economical for large areas where speed is less critical
- Establishment in 2-3 months
Stolonizing
- Scattering stolon pieces over prepared soil and top-dressing with soil
- Used for grass species that spread by stolons (Bermuda grass)
Lawn Preparation Steps
- Land clearing — Remove debris, stones, weed roots
- Levelling — Ensure smooth, even surface with gentle slope for drainage
- Soil improvement — Add sand (for clay soils) or organic matter; ensure well-drained topsoil layer of 15-20 cm
- Base fertilization — Apply 2-3 kg/sq.m of well-rotted FYM and NPK mixture
- Final grading — Smooth the surface and firm with a roller
- Planting — By chosen method (seeding, turfing, or dibbling)
- Watering — Light, frequent irrigation until establishment
Lawn Maintenance
Mowing
- Maintain cutting height of 2-3 cm for Bermuda grass; 3-5 cm for others
- Frequency: Weekly during active growth; fortnightly in winter
- Never remove more than one-third of leaf blade in a single mowing
- Reel mower gives the best quality cut; rotary mower for rough areas
Irrigation
- Deep, infrequent watering is preferred over frequent shallow watering
- 2-3 irrigations per week during summer; once a week in winter
- Early morning irrigation is ideal to reduce disease risk
Fertilization
- Apply NPK (4:1:2 ratio) quarterly
- Nitrogen: 20-30 g/sq.m/year in 4-6 split applications
- Top-dressing: Sand + FYM mixture applied annually for levelling
Common Lawn Problems
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Bare patches | Shade, compaction, disease | Re-sodding, aeration, fungicide |
| Weed invasion | Poor density, low fertility | Herbicide (2,4-D), improve nutrition |
| Brown patch | Rhizoctonia fungus | Reduce watering, apply fungicide |
| Dollar spot | Sclerotinia fungus | Nitrogen application, fungicide |
| Thatch buildup | Excessive organic matter | Dethatching, vertical mowing |
Summary Cheat Sheet
| Topic | Key Point |
