🏫 Key Beekeeping Institutions in India
NBB, CBRTI, KVIC, and All India Bee Keepers Association -- their founding, locations, objectives, and roles in promoting apiculture
In the previous lesson, we covered apiary management -- site selection, honey extraction, and pollination practices. Now we look at the institutions that support, train, and coordinate India's beekeeping sector.
When a tribal beekeeper in Jharkhand wants scientific training on colony management, or a progressive farmer in Punjab needs quality queen bees for his Italian bee apiary, they turn to India's network of beekeeping institutions. From the National Bee Board that coordinates policy to the CBRTI that conducts research, these organisations form the institutional backbone of Indian apiculture. Questions about their founding years, locations, and functions appear frequently in competitive exams.
This lesson covers:
- National Bee Board (NBB) -- objectives and role
- CBRTI -- apex research and training institute
- All India Bee Keepers Association -- publications
- KVIC -- village industries promotion

TIP
Exam Trap: NBB was established in 2000 and reconstituted in 2006. Do not confuse these two dates. "Established = 2000, Reconstituted = 2006."
National Bee Board (NBB)
- Registered Society under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860, established on 19th July 2000 at New Delhi.
- Promoted by the Small Farmers' Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC), a government society for promoting agri-business among small and marginal farmers.
- In May 2005, beekeeping was included as a supplemental activity under National Horticulture Mission (NHM) for promoting cross-pollination of horticultural crops -- a landmark policy decision.
- Reconstituted in June 2006 to expand scope and resources.
Objectives of NBB
| Objective | Detail |
|---|---|
| Scientific beekeeping development | Popularise technologies through NHM and Horticulture Mission for NE/Himalayan States |
| Capacity building | Nucleus stock production, training of bee breeders and beekeepers |
| Knowledge dissemination | Publications and quarterly magazine Bee World |
| Quality production | Promote quality honey and bee products for domestic and export markets |
| Rural employment | Enhance income of beekeepers, farmers, and landless labourers |
Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI)
- Apex institute set up in 1962 at Pune to strengthen apiculture research and training.
- Operates under KVIC with an extensive network of:
- 15 State Beekeeping Extension Centres (SBECs)
- 100 registered institutions, cooperatives, and State Khadi & VI Boards
- This network ensures scientific beekeeping knowledge reaches grassroots-level beekeepers across all states.
All India Bee Keepers Association
- Located at Pune (co-located with CBRTI, creating a hub for beekeeping research and professional collaboration).
- Publishes the Indian Bee Journal -- an important scientific publication for research findings, technical articles, and industry updates on Indian beekeeping.
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)
- Headquartered in Mumbai.
- Statutory body under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
- Charged with planning, promotion, organisation, and implementation of programmes for Khadi and village industries in rural areas.
- Historically one of the largest promoters of beekeeping in India, integrating it into the broader mission of village-level economic development.
