⤭ Breeding Methods for Cross-Pollinated Crops

Understand population improvement, recurrent selection, synthetic and composite varieties, and multiline varieties for cross-pollinated crops — with agricultural examples.

Why Breeding in Cross-Pollinated Crops Differs

Maize, bajra (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum), and sunflower are cross-pollinated crops — naturally heterozygous and heterogeneous. Unlike self-pollinated crops where the goal is a uniform pure line, here the goal is to improve the population as a whole while maintaining enough genetic diversity for continued adaptation. Methods like recurrent selection, synthetic varieties, and hybrid development are unique to these crops.

Selection in Cross-pollinated Crops

NOTE

Cross-pollinated crops (maize, bajra, jowar, etc.) are fundamentally different from self-pollinated crops in their genetic structure. Their heterozygous nature requires entirely different breeding strategies.

  • Cross pollinated crops are highly heterozygous due to free intermating of plants. This means that each individual plant carries a different combination of alleles, resulting in considerable genetic variation within the population. Such crops are called random mating populations due to equal opportunity of mating in each individual. Random mating population is also called Mendelian population or Panmictic population.
  • To understand the genetic make-up of such population we need population genetics.
  • Fundamental law of population genetics is the Hardy-Weinberg law which provides the basis to study Mendelian populations. This law was independently developed by Hardy (1908) in England and Weinberg (1909) in Germany.

  • According to Hardy-Weinberg law:

"The gene and genotype frequencies in a Mendelian population remain constant generation after generation if there is no selection, mutation, migration or random drift".
