Trees, Shrubs, and Climbers for Landscaping

The selection of appropriate plant material is central to successful landscaping. Trees, shrubs, and climbers serve distinct functional and ornamental roles in the designed landscape.

Shade and Avenue Trees

Large canopy trees provide shade, reduce ambient temperature, and frame the skyline. Gulmohar (Delonix regia) is prized for its brilliant red-orange blooms during summer. Neem (Azadirachta indica) offers dense shade and pest-repelling properties. Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is valued for its compact columnar form and year-round foliage, making it ideal for avenue planting. Other important species include Peltophorum (Copper pod), Cassia fistula (Amaltas), and Tabebuia for seasonal flowering displays.

Shrubs and Hedges

Shrubs form the middle layer of the landscape and are used for hedges, borders, screens, and specimen planting. Duranta (Duranta erecta) is widely used for formal hedges due to its dense branching and tolerance to frequent pruning. Clerodendrum inerme serves as an excellent informal hedge with glossy foliage. Ixora provides vibrant flower clusters in red, orange, and yellow. Murraya paniculata (Orange Jasmine) is popular for its fragrant white flowers and neat hedge form. Bougainvillea can also be maintained as a flowering shrub through regular pruning.

Climbers and Creepers

Climbers add vertical interest and soften hard structures. Bougainvillea is the most widely grown climber in India, thriving in full sun with minimal water. Thunbergia grandiflora (Bengal Clock Vine) produces cascading blue flowers suitable for pergolas and trellises. Quisqualis indica (Rangoon Creeper) offers fragrant flowers that change color from white to pink to red. Antigonon leptopus (Coral Vine) and Jasminum species are used for fences and archways, providing both visual appeal and fragrance.
