🎒 Lawn Development and Maintenance
Lawn Development and Maintenance.
This lesson builds core elective concepts in BSc Agriculture with practical applications and exam-oriented clarity.
Lawn Development and Maintenance
A well-maintained lawn is the foundation of any landscape, providing a green carpet that unifies all other design elements. Proper grass selection, establishment methods, and maintenance practices determine lawn quality and longevity.
Grass Types
Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass / Doob grass) is the most common warm-season lawn grass in India. It is hardy, drought-tolerant, and spreads rapidly through stolons and rhizomes. Zoysia japonica (Korean grass) produces a dense, fine-textured turf with excellent shade tolerance, though it establishes slowly. Stenotaphrum secundatum (Buffalo grass) performs well in partial shade and coastal areas. For cooler hill regions, Poa pratensis (Kentucky Bluegrass) and Festuca species are preferred. Axonopus compressus (Carpet grass) is suitable for moist, shaded areas with acidic soils.
Lawn Establishment
Lawns may be established through seeding, sodding (turfing), dibbling, or stolon planting. Land preparation involves clearing, leveling, adding organic matter, and ensuring proper drainage with a gentle slope of 1-2%. Sodding provides an instant lawn but is more expensive. Seeding is economical for large areas but requires 4-6 weeks for full coverage.
Mowing and Fertilization
Regular mowing at the correct height maintains density and appearance. Bermuda grass is mowed at 2-3 cm, while Zoysia tolerates 3-5 cm. The one-third rule states that no more than one-third of the grass blade length should be removed in a single mowing. Fertilization with nitrogen-based fertilizers (urea or ammonium sulphate) at 2-3 kg N per 100 sq. m. per application promotes vigorous growth.
Weed Control
Common lawn weeds include Oxalis, Cyperus rotundus (nutgrass), and broad-leaved species. Pre-emergent herbicides like atrazine and post-emergent applications of 2,4-D help control weeds. Hand-weeding remains effective for small infestations. Maintaining a dense, healthy turf is the best long-term weed prevention strategy.
