๐ŸŒถ๏ธ Chilli Seed Production

Chilli seed production practices, field standards, and post-harvest handling for quality seed.

Chilli seed production demands strict isolation and careful rouging because moderate natural outcrossing can quickly reduce genetic purity.

Crop Biology and Purity Risk

Chilli is primarily self-pollinated but may show variable cross-pollination depending on pollinator activity and environment. Therefore, varietal seed multiplication requires close field supervision.

Critical implications:

  • Off-types spread rapidly if rouging is delayed.
  • Border effects can increase admixture.
  • Uniformity checks must continue through fruit maturity.

Isolation and Field Management

Maintain recommended isolation for class of seed and remove volunteer plants before transplanting. Planting should ensure good aeration, easy inspection, and disease surveillance.

Key practices:

  • Healthy nursery seedlings only.
  • Balanced NPK and irrigation scheduling.
  • Regular rouging for plant type, fruit shape, and fruit color.

Harvesting, Extraction, and Drying

Use physiologically mature red fruits for seed extraction. Avoid damaged or diseased fruits and lots exposed to heavy rain at harvest.

Processing flow:

  • Fruit crushing and seed separation.
  • Repeated washing to remove pulp residues.
  • Shade drying to safe moisture for storage stability.
  • Cleaning and grading before packing.

Storage and Quality Assurance

Seed quality depends on moisture management, package type, and storage hygiene. Treated and properly dried seed retains viability longer.

Quality checkpoints:

  • Moisture near safe limits before packing.
  • Label integrity and lot traceability.
  • Periodic germination checks during storage.
