🥒 Bhendi Seed Production

Bhendi or okra seed production, crop management, and harvest-stage practices for good seed quality.

Bhendi seed production is quality-sensitive because varietal traits are highly visible in plant and pod characters, making timely rouging and maturity-based harvest essential.

Crop Features Relevant to Seed Production

Bhendi is generally self-pollinated with some insect-mediated outcrossing. Seed producers must monitor plant height, branching habit, flowering pattern, and pod characteristics.

Observed purity markers:

  • Stem and leaf morphology
  • Pod length, ridges, and color
  • Earliness and flowering behavior

Isolation and Rouging Standards

Isolation prevents pollen contamination, while rouging eliminates visible off-types and diseased plants before flowering and again during poding.

Operational priorities:

  • Select land free from volunteer bhendi.
  • Maintain class-specific isolation distance.
  • Rogue at pre-flowering, flowering, and pod maturity stages.

Harvesting and Seed Processing

Pods for seed should be harvested only at full physiological maturity when dry and straw-colored. Immature pods reduce viability.

Processing essentials:

  • Dry pods uniformly before threshing.
  • Extract seed with minimal mechanical injury.
  • Clean and grade seed to improve marketability.

Storage Management

Store only well-dried seed in clean, moisture-protected containers. Seed treatment may be used as per recommendation for storage fungal protection.

Storage checkpoints:

  • Safe moisture before packing.
  • Cool, dry storage room.
  • Periodic viability testing.
