๐Ÿง… Onion Seed Production

Bulb-to-seed methods, isolation, and field management principles for onion seed production.

Onion seed production relies on correct method selection, strict isolation, and staged umbel harvesting because flowering is asynchronous and quality declines rapidly in poor storage.

Methods of Onion Seed Production

Two common approaches are used:

  • Bulb-to-seed: preferred for high genetic purity and selection.
  • Seed-to-seed: simpler but less selective.

Bulb-to-seed is generally favored in organized seed systems because true-to-type bulbs can be selected before planting.

Isolation, Planting, and Rouging

Onion is cross-pollinated via insects, so isolation is critical. Keep fields away from other onion varieties and related pollinating sources.

Management points:

  • Plant healthy bulbs or seedlings at recommended spacing.
  • Rogue off-types at bulb stage, vegetative stage, and flowering stage.
  • Remove diseased plants early to protect umbels.

Umbel Harvest and Seed Extraction

Umbels mature in phases; seed shattering risk is high if harvest is delayed. Harvest should be staggered based on capsule maturity.

Post-harvest flow:

  • Shade dry harvested umbels.
  • Thresh gently and clean seed.
  • Avoid overheating during drying.

Storage and Seed Quality

Onion seed is relatively short-lived, so moisture control and cool storage are essential for retaining germination.

Core standards:

  • Dry seed to safe moisture before storage.
  • Use moisture-resistant containers.
  • Test germination periodically during carryover.
