🍏 Aonla

Aonla medicinal importance, vitamin C richness, and orchard-level production basics.

Aonla (amla) is a hardy medicinal fruit tree valued for high vitamin C content, antioxidant properties, and long productive life.

Crop Profile and Uses

Aonla (Phyllanthus emblica / Emblica officinalis) is used in medicinal systems and nutraceutical products.

Major utility:

  • Antioxidant-rich fruits.
  • Processing into powders, candy, pickles, and health formulations.

Climate and Soil

The crop adapts to tropical and subtropical conditions and tolerates moderately alkaline soils.

Preferred conditions:

  • Light to medium soils with drainage.
  • Annual rainfall around 630 to 800 mm.
  • Young plants need protection from hot winds and frost.

Varieties, Propagation, and Planting

Commonly cultivated varieties include Banarasi, Chakaiya, Francis, NA-series, and BSR-1.

Propagation is mainly by shield budding on seedling rootstocks. Pits are filled with FYM and phosphorus before planting.

Orchard Management

  • Irrigation at intervals in early years.
  • Pruning to maintain scaffold branches.
  • Basin mulching during summer.
  • Intercropping with pulses during early non-bearing years.

Protection, Harvesting, and Yield

Noted problems include bark-eating caterpillar and rust disease in susceptible locations.

Harvesting:

  • Fruiting starts around 4 to 5 years.
  • Mature trees can produce substantial yield annually.
