🏚️ Order Isoptera and Termitidae

Systematic characters and family importance of termites under Isoptera.

Termites are socially organized insects that look pale and ant-like, but they differ clearly in body structure, caste system, and equal-sized wings. Their importance in agriculture and structures comes from both their wood-feeding habit and their role in tropical ecosystems.

Meaning and General Characters of Isoptera

  • iso means equal
  • ptera means wings
  • common name: termites

Important characters:

  • pale, elongate body, often called "white ants"
  • reproductive forms bear two pairs of membranous wings of equal length
  • wings are shed after mating
  • mouthparts are chewing type
  • antennae are about as long as the head and typically beaded
  • development is hemimetabolous

Termites are orthopteroid insects and are closely related to cockroaches and mantids.

Equal-sized wings in the reproductive caste, social organization, chewing mouthparts, and pale worker forms are the easiest recognition points for Isoptera.

Important Families of Termites

Major families covered in this lesson are:

  • Rhinotermitidae - subterranean termites that build nests in soil and infest wood in contact with ground
  • Hodotermitidae - rottenwood termites, usually associated with moist wood
  • Kalotermitidae - drywood and dampwood termites that nest directly in wood
  • Termitidae - higher termites, especially common in tropical regions

Among these, Termitidae includes many agriculturally and ecologically important species.

Physical Features of Immatures and Adults

Character Immatures (Workers and Soldiers) Adults (Reproductives)
Body colour Pale, ant-like, but with broad waist Often darker pigmented
Eyes Small or absent Compound eyes present
Head Large cylindrical or rounded head Well-developed head with chewing mouthparts and beaded antennae
Antennae and wings Beaded antennae; wingless caste forms Two pairs of similar membranous wings, shed after mating
Mouthparts Chewing, often with strong mandibles Chewing mouthparts present

Summary Cheat Sheet

  • Isoptera means equal-winged insects and includes termites.
  • Main order characters are pale elongate body, chewing mouthparts, beaded antennae, and equal membranous wings in reproductives.
  • Development is hemimetabolous.
  • Important families are Rhinotermitidae, Hodotermitidae, Kalotermitidae, and Termitidae.
  • Workers and soldiers are usually pale and wingless, while reproductives are winged and often pigmented.
  • Termites are agriculturally important because many species damage wood, stored cellulose materials, and structures, though they also have ecological importance.
